How to Clean an Automatic Cat Feeder: PETKIT Steps
How to clean an automatic cat feeder: which PETKIT Fresh Element Solo and Dual-hopper 2 parts to wash, wipe, and dry, plus desiccant timing and how often.

The short answer
How to clean an automatic cat feeder, for the Fresh Element Solo and the YumShare Dual-hopper 2, is a split between sink parts and dry parts. Unplug the feeder, empty the hopper, and take the desiccant packet out of the lid. Wash the hopper, lid, dispensing pieces, and stainless bowl with a little detergent, then rinse. Wipe the main unit. Dry every washed part before it goes back, and only then put in a new packet.
| Part | Fresh Element Solo | YumShare Dual-hopper 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless bowl, lid, hopper | Wash after the packet is out | Wash; soft cloth inside the hopper |
| Vanes, impeller, impeller cover | Official video: remove and clean, including the silicone cover | Pull the vanes, turn the cover clockwise, wash the impeller and cover |
| Center partition | One hopper, no partition | Lift it out only when that side is empty |
| Desiccant packet | Remove; do not wash; replace | Remove; do not wash; replace |
| Main unit | Must not get wet; wipe | Damp tissue only; do not immerse |
| Camera | None | Diagram label: non-detachable; do not scratch it |
People looking up how to clean a PETKIT feeder usually have one of these two. The steps come from the manuals, PETKIT’s Solo cleaning video, and PETKIT’s product pages. We have not cleaned these feeders.
What to set out
Unplug the cord, empty the kibble into a dry container, and keep a soft sponge, a little detergent, and a towel or rack. The P592 manual says to clean the hopper with a sponge or soft cloth, not a hard tool, because scratches can affect the sensor. The Solo manual PDF and the P592 cleaning section both stop at detergent and a rinse. They do not name bleach, vinegar, or a dishwasher cycle.
How to clean an automatic cat feeder: one order for both models
- Unplug. The Dual-hopper 2 safety guide says to unplug before you move the unit. The Solo video starts with the power off and the hopper empty.
- Remove the desiccant, then the stainless bowl, then the hopper.
- Pull the vanes or paddles. Turn the impeller cover clockwise and lift the impeller out.
- Wash only the rows marked “wash” above. Wipe the base, including crumbs in the bowl holder. Do not pour water through the outlet.
- Wait until the parts are completely dry, install a new packet, lock the hopper, and run one manual feed before you fill to the MAX line.
If food still does not drop, use automatic cat feeder not dispensing food for power, kibble size, and the outlet sensor. Another rinse will not fix a schedule or a dead backup battery.
On the Solo, two published removal methods exist. The video says to press both PUSH buttons and lift. The printed manual says to press the PUSH button on one side, lean the container, and slide it off. Follow the diagram that matches your unit.
Fresh Element Solo: video parts the short manual skips
The printed cleaning section washes the food container, including the dispenser paddles, the lid, and the stainless bowl, then says the main unit cannot get wet.
PETKIT’s video, Cleaning of FRESH ELEMENT SOLO, adds the pieces under the hopper. Wipe the main unit with a wet tissue. Pull the dispensing vanes, turn the impeller cover clockwise, remove the impeller, and take off its silicone cover. The video’s wash list is the lid, hopper, bowl, impeller cover, impeller, silicone cover, and vanes.
Putting it back has four marks:
- Seat the silicone cover on the impeller.
- Note point A (shorter) and point B (longer) on the hopper floor.
- Turn the impeller cover counterclockwise until it clicks.
- Press the vanes into their slots, close a new packet into the lid, press the PUSH buttons to seat the hopper, and replace the bowl.
If the container will not lock, the printed manual says to rotate the dispenser paddles until the PUSH button snaps into the round notches. The Fresh Element Solo review covers that same lock at first setup, plus the 12 mm kibble limit.
A Reddit user in r/PETKIT found a loose piece in a Solo bowl and could not place it. Other users called it part of the dispensing sweeper, and PETKIT’s account offered a replacement hopper. If a cover or vane will not match the A/B marks and the click, ask support instead of forcing it.
YumShare Dual-hopper 2: two paths and a camera you do not soak
Model P592’s cleaning section, in the manual linked above, is the order for this body:
- Open the lid, remove the used desiccant, take out the partition, and remove the bowl.
- Hold both PUSH buttons and lift the hopper off.
- Pull the food dispensing vanes. Turn the impeller cover clockwise and take out the impeller.
- Wash the hopper, vanes, impeller cover, impeller, upper lid, and bowl with detergent, and rinse well.
- Wait until each part is dry, then install them in turn.
The same page says to use a sponge or soft cloth inside the hopper. Do not immerse the main unit; wipe it with a damp tissue. The safety guide repeats that the base must not be soaked, and that the feeder should not be used in a damp place. The product diagram labels the camera “Non-detachable,” and the safety guide says not to scratch or polish it with sharp objects. The lens gets the damp wipe, not a sink.
Do not pull the partition while food is still in either side. That warning is in the “adding pet food” section. Empty both hoppers first. The specifications list hopper 01 at 2 L and hopper 02 at 3 L, and both still drop into one bowl. Cleaning one side leaves the other vanes dirty.
The manual sends finer reassembly to a QR-code video and does not print a public URL for it. Without that video, the install steps you can read still apply: line the notches up with the PUSH buttons until the buttons sit fully in, then seat the bowl. The YumShare Dual-hopper 2 review is the page for whether you need the second hopper at all.
Desiccant stays out of the wash
The packet lives in a compartment in the lid. At setup you lay it in and close the door. At cleaning you take the used packet out before the lid is washed. Neither wash list includes the packet.
PETKIT’s desiccant page lists model P5121, silica gel, five pieces, “all PETKIT smart feeders,” and an optimum replacement cycle of 4 weeks per piece. The Solo product page says the PETKIT app sends notifications that include desiccant replacement, along with meal dispensing, low food, and firmware updates. Swap the packet on that cycle. Do not rinse it and put it back.
The Solo video puts the new packet in only after the other pieces are dry. A damp lid wets the new pack at once. This site has no separate buy button for it.
Dry the outlet path before food goes back
Kibble leaves through the impeller at the bottom of the hopper. That is why both cleaning sections have you pull the vanes and turn the cover clockwise. Wipe crumbs off the bowl holder. Do not run water down the outlet to chase a crumb into the base.
The Solo manual says each part must be completely dry before reinstall. The P592 manual says to wait until each part is dry, then install in turn. Check the underside of the impeller cover and the vane slots, not only the bowl. Then run one manual feed. On the Dual-hopper 2, hold the button for hopper 01 or 02 and release it to stop. On the Solo, hold the manual feed button. Fill to the MAX line only after pieces actually fall.
How often to clean an automatic cat feeder
The hopper sections do not say “every week” or “every day.” A single weekly deep-clean for every automatic feeder is someone else’s schedule.
- Desiccant: 4 weeks per piece on PETKIT’s desiccant page, for every PETKIT smart feeder. The Solo page lists desiccant replacement among the app notifications.
- Full take-apart: no day count in either cleaning section. Do it with the packet change, and sooner if crumbs stick to the vanes, the cover, or the outlet.
- Stainless bowl: it lifts off on its own. CDC’s pet-supplies page (Feb. 18, 2026) lists cleaning pet bowls after every wet-food use and every day for dry food. These feeders are for dry food. PETKIT did not copy that day count into these manuals. The bowl can still come off daily because it is a bowl.
CDC also describes bleach and a dishwasher for some pet items, and says vinegar lacks enough evidence as a disinfectant. Stay with the detergent these manuals name. Do not soak the base. If the feeder jams, clear the path, then go back to the 4-week packet cycle.
Mistakes that fight the manual
- Soaking the main unit, or spraying the port, buttons, or camera.
- Washing the lid with the packet still inside, or rinsing the packet.
- Pulling the Dual-hopper 2 partition while kibble is still in a side.
- Scrubbing the hopper with a hard tool.
- Reassembling while the cover or vane slots are damp.
- Treating the stainless bowl as proof the hopper is dishwasher-safe.
- Filling to the MAX line before a manual feed shows the impeller turning.
Which body you are cleaning
The Solo page says the USB adapter is not included and calls for 5 V, 1 A. The YumShare Dual-hopper 2 page lists a DC 6 V adapter and four D batteries, sold separately.
The Solo is one 3 L hopper and no camera. The Dual-hopper 2 is the 2 L + 3 L body, and the camera stays on the base while you wash. Fresh Element Solo vs YumShare Dual-hopper 2 sets capacity, Wi-Fi, and backup batteries next to that difference. How to choose an automatic cat feeder is the wider order: kibble size, portions, and power before the cleaning chore.
Before the next meal
How to clean an automatic cat feeder on either of these models is the same list next time: packet out, wash the named pieces, wipe the base, dry everything, packet in, one manual feed. The 4-week desiccant cycle is the hopper interval PETKIT prints. The bowl can come off more often. If the manual in the box shows a different PUSH direction, follow that page.

FAQ
How often should I clean an automatic cat feeder?
The Solo and Dual-hopper 2 cleaning sections do not print a day count for the hopper. PETKIT's desiccant page lists 4 weeks per piece for all PETKIT smart feeders. CDC's pet-supplies page (Feb. 18, 2026) lists a daily wash for dry-food bowls. Wash the stainless bowl on that bowl cadence, and do the full take-apart when you change the desiccant or when crumbs stick in the dispensing path.
Which parts of a PETKIT feeder can get wet?
Wash the hopper, lid, dispensing pieces, and stainless bowl with detergent, then rinse. Take the desiccant out first and do not wash the packet. Wipe the main unit. On the Dual-hopper 2 the camera is marked non-detachable and stays with that base.
Can I put PETKIT feeder parts in the dishwasher?
Both cleaning sections describe detergent, a rinse, and a full dry. Neither names a dishwasher cycle, so do not treat the hopper, lid, or impeller cover as dishwasher-safe.
What should I do with the desiccant packet?
Remove the used packet before you wash the lid. Do not rinse it. After the washed parts are dry, put a new packet in the lid compartment. PETKIT lists 4 weeks per piece for desiccant model P5121. The Solo product page says the PETKIT app notifications include desiccant replacement.
The food container will not lock after I clean it. What should I try?
On the Solo, rotate the dispenser paddles until the PUSH button snaps into the round notches. On the Dual-hopper 2, press the PUSH buttons until they sit fully in the side notches. If a loose piece does not match the official Solo video, ask PETKIT support instead of forcing it.
