Automatic Cat Feeder Not Dispensing Food? 10 Checks in Order

Cat feeder not dispensing food? Test manual feed, then check power, batteries, schedule, hopper fit, kibble size, jams, and the outlet sensor, in order.

The short answer

When an automatic cat feeder stops dispensing, the motor has usually not failed. Start with one test, then work through the checks in order:

  1. Press and hold the manual feed button. If food comes out, the mechanism works and the problem is the schedule, power timing, or connection. If nothing comes out, the problem is in the feeder itself.
  2. Is power actually reaching the feeder?
  3. Are the backup batteries present, alkaline, and charged?
  4. Is the feeding plan on, and did the feeder go offline?
  5. Is the hopper locked onto the base and the lid closed?
  6. Is there enough food in the hopper?
  7. Is the food dry and small enough for the dispenser?
  8. Is kibble jammed in the chute, outlet, or impeller?
  9. Is the anti-clog sensor at the outlet dirty?
  10. Does the impeller turn during a manual feed? If not, contact support.

This order follows PETKIT’s own troubleshooting sheet, hosted on Amazon for its YumShare Dual-Hopper feeder, plus the user manuals for the Fresh Element Solo, YumShare Solo with Camera, and YumShare Dual-hopper 2. We have not tested these feeders hands-on. Where your model’s manual differs from the general steps here, follow the manual.

Until the feeder is reliable again, feed your cat by hand. A cat that misses meals needs a person, not a better app setting. If your cat has gone without food, contact your veterinarian.

If you are still choosing a feeder rather than fixing one, start with how to choose an automatic cat feeder.

First: manual feed or scheduled feed?

PETKIT’s troubleshooting sheet splits the problem in two, and so should you.

  • Manual feeding works, scheduled meals do not. The dispenser is fine. Look at power cuts, batteries, the feeding plan, and whether the feeder was online at the time of the missed meal (checks 2–4).
  • Manual feeding does not work either. Look at assembly, food, and blockages (checks 5–10).

On the YumShare Solo and Fresh Element Solo, you hold the feed button to dispense and release it to stop. On the Dual-hopper 2, there is a separate button for hopper 01 and hopper 02, so test both. One empty or jammed hopper can look like a dead feeder.

1. Confirm power reaches the feeder

PETKIT’s sheet for a feeder that will not power on:

  • Check the plug is not loose and the outlet works.
  • Unplug, plug back in, and see whether the indicator lights up.
  • If the indicator stays off, remove the adapter and run the feeder on alkaline batteries. If it lights up on batteries, the sheet says the adapter is faulty.

A dark indicator does not always mean no power. PETKIT’s sheet says to check whether the indicator has been switched off in the app. The YumShare Solo manual adds that the indicator light is not on in battery mode.

Use the adapter that came with the feeder. The YumShare Solo and Dual-hopper 2 manuals both list a 6V 2A rated input and warn that a non-original adapter may damage the device. These are not 5V USB fountains, so a phone charger is not a stand-in.

2. Check the backup batteries

Backup batteries only help if they are in the feeder and charged. The Fresh Element Solo manual says that if mains power is cut and no batteries are installed, the feeder stops working until power returns. PETKIT’s “food won’t come out” checklist names low batteries and power cuts without batteries as causes.

  • Fresh Element Solo: 5 AAA batteries (bought separately)
  • YumShare Solo with Camera: 5 AAA batteries
  • YumShare Dual-hopper 2: 4 D batteries

All three manuals say to use alkaline batteries only and to check or replace them before leaving the feeder unattended for a long time.

3. Check the feeding plan, the clock, and the connection

If manual feeding works, open the app and confirm the feeding plan is switched on, with the meal times and portions you expect.

Then check whether the feeder was offline at the time. PETKIT’s sheet says the feeder keeps dispensing on its schedule when it goes offline. Offline still matters, though:

  • The Fresh Element Solo manual says meals logged while offline may show as “unknown”, only up to 10 feeding records sync once it reconnects, and you cannot change the schedule while it is offline.
  • PETKIT’s sheet says that in battery mode or energy-saving mode, feeding records are not shown in the app. A missing record is not proof that food was not dispensed.
  • On camera models, switching the camera off does not stop meals. The YumShare Solo manual says feeding plans still work with the camera off.

If the feeder keeps dropping offline:

  • The Amazon listing (as of Oct 18, 2026) lists 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi for YumShare Solo. An older manual (model P571) lists 2.4 GHz only, so check the manual that came with the unit. Fresh Element Solo’s documentation lists 2.4 GHz only. PETKIT’s sheet suggests splitting a dual-band router into separate networks for a 2.4 GHz feeder. The Dual-hopper 2 manual says that model supports 5 GHz.
  • Keep the feeder within about 6 m (19.7 ft) of the router with no walls in between, the sheet’s suggested range.
  • As a test, connect the feeder to your phone’s hotspot. If it stays online there, the sheet says the problem is your home network or router settings.

PETKIT’s manuals also say firmware is updated from time to time through the app. If the app offers an update, install it before deeper troubleshooting.

4. Re-lock the hopper and close the lid

A hopper that is not fully seated may not line up with the dispensing mechanism.

  • YumShare Solo and Dual-hopper 2: the manuals say to align the notches on both sides of the hopper with the PUSH buttons on the base and press until the buttons are fully in the notches.
  • Fresh Element Solo: the manual says that if the food container will not lock into place, rotate the dispenser paddles until the PUSH button snaps into the circular notch.
  • Lid: on the camera models, insert the rear edge of the lid into the two holes above the hopper and press it down.

Also make sure the feeder stands on a level surface. All three manuals ask for one and warn that the device may not work properly if it is tipped over.

5. Keep enough food in the hopper

The Fresh Element Solo manual says each serving is a fixed volume of roughly 10 g, and that the actual weight depends on the size and density of the food. It also says portions are most consistent when the container is full, and may shrink when the food level is low. A near-empty hopper can look like a feeder that has stopped.

Fill to the MAX line, not above it. On the Dual-hopper 2, check both hoppers separately, and do not pull out the partition while there is still food in the hopper, per the manual.

6. Check the food: dry, and small enough

This is the most common cause on PETKIT’s checklist, and it can start without warning when you switch food brands.

  • Dry food only. All three manuals warn against putting anything other than dry pet food in the hopper. PETKIT’s sheet says to make sure the food in the tank is dry.
  • Size limits. The YumShare Solo and Dual-hopper 2 manuals recommend dry kibble up to 12 mm (0.47 in) and freeze-dried pieces up to 9 mm (0.35 in). The Fresh Element Solo listing gives the same 12 mm limit for dry food.
  • Measure the widest pieces in the bag you actually use, not the bag you started with.

Keep the desiccant in its compartment in the lid. The manuals have you install it at setup and remove the used one when cleaning. Moisture in the hopper can make kibble sticky.

7. Clear a jam in the chute, outlet, or impeller

PETKIT’s sheet says to remove the food tank and check whether the chute inside is blocked, and to look for food or foreign objects at the food outlet. The YumShare Solo and Dual-hopper 2 manuals give the same order for taking the dispenser apart:

  1. Unplug the feeder. Open the lid, remove the desiccant, and take out the food bowl.
  2. Hold the PUSH buttons on both sides and lift the hopper off the base.
  3. Pull out the food dispensing vanes inside the hopper.
  4. Turn the impeller cover clockwise to remove it, then take out the impeller.
  5. Clear any wedged kibble, crumbs, or debris.
  6. Wash the removable parts, rinse well, and let everything dry completely before you put it back.

The Fresh Element Solo manual describes the same idea for its container and silicone dispenser paddles. On all three, the main unit must not get wet. Wipe it with a damp cloth instead. Use a sponge or soft cloth inside the hopper. The camera-model manuals warn that hard tools can scratch the plastic and affect the sensor.

8. Wipe the anti-clog sensor at the outlet

PETKIT’s sheet names a dirty or blocked anti-clog detector at the food outlet as a cause of food not coming out. It also covers the reverse problem: if the hopper is empty but the feeder does not report a shortage, wipe the infrared sensor at the outlet, then run a manual feed with the hopper empty and see whether the shortage alert appears.

If it still does not report correctly, the sheet says to contact PETKIT support with a video of the fault and the device SN.

9. Restart the feeder

After cleaning and reassembly, power-cycle it. One owner on PETKIT’s community forum reported that, with a Fresh Element Mini that sometimes stopped dispensing, the only fix was to unplug the feeder, wait for the Wi-Fi light to go off, and plug it back in. That is an owner report, not an official PETKIT step, but you can still try it.

If the feeder works after a restart but the problem keeps coming back, note the dates and times. Support will ask for them.

10. Watch the impeller, then contact support

This is PETKIT’s last check before support. With the feeder assembled and food in the hopper, open the top lid, press manual feed, and watch the impeller.

  • It does not turn, or turns abnormally: email support@petkit.com with a short video of the fault and the device SN, per PETKIT’s sheet.
  • Manual feed works, but planned meals fail while the feeder is online: send support the date and time of the failed meal, the failure record from the app, and the SN.
  • The feeder will not power on, even on batteries: send the SN and the email address you use to log in to the PETKIT app.

Do not open the electronics yourself. The PETKIT manuals say repairs should be done by, or under the guidance of, a professional. In one PETKIT forum thread about “system error” faults, owners say they were told the fix was a mainboard replacement. If your feeder is under warranty, start with the seller or PETKIT. As of Oct 18, 2026, the YumShare Solo with Camera Amazon listing says PETKIT after-sales service was “upgraded to 2-year coverage”. Check the terms for your own model and purchase.

Don’t rely on alerts alone

The feeders in this guide advertise app alerts. The YumShare listings mention food shortage, power failure, and other problem alerts. But one owner on PETKIT’s community forum reported finding a “System error. Feeder stopped.” message in the app days after scheduled meals had stopped, with no notification and no warning light on the unit. That is one owner’s report, not a measured failure rate. It is still a reason to check, every day, that food actually left the hopper.

On a camera feeder, a quick look at the bowl in the app does this job. Without a camera, it takes a person or a glance at the bowl when you get home. Our camera vs no-camera comparison explains when that check is worth it.

If you are replacing the feeder

Replace the feeder only after the checks above, a support ticket, and the warranty route are done. If you are buying again, look at the cause of the failure first:

  • The food was the problem (oversized, freeze-dried, or oily pieces): any of these feeders has the same size limits. Change the food or the feeder type, not just the brand.
  • Silent failures were the problem: a camera model lets you see the bowl. The YumShare Solo with Camera review covers the compact option.
  • You only need timed dry food: the Fresh Element Solo review covers the no-camera option. The listing says up to 10 meals a day and 1–5 portions per meal at 1/10 cup each.
  • One hopper keeps running low, or you rotate two dry foods: the YumShare Dual-hopper 2 review covers the 5 L, two-hopper model (2 L and 3 L per the manual).

The three formats side by side are in our PETKIT automatic cat feeder shortlist. If the real problem is one cat eating another cat’s food, a timed feeder will not fix that. See the RFID cat feeder buying guide.

Prevent it from happening again

  • Keep to the food size limits, and re-measure when you change food.
  • Keep the hopper reasonably full and below the MAX line.
  • Keep the desiccant in place, and replace it when you clean.
  • Clean the hopper, vanes, impeller, and bowl on your manual’s schedule, and dry every part before reassembly.
  • Keep fresh alkaline batteries installed, and check them before any trip.
  • Set the feeder on a level surface, ideally in a corner or against a wall, as the manuals suggest, so a pet cannot tip it.
  • Check every day that meals were actually dispensed. Do not rely on alerts.

What this guide does not claim

  • We have not tested any of these feeders, measured jam rates or portion accuracy, or checked long-term reliability.
  • Indicator behavior, battery types, and Wi-Fi support differ between models and generations. The details above come from each product’s own documentation and may not match your unit.
  • The restart tip and the “system error” reports come from owner posts on PETKIT’s community forum, not from PETKIT instructions.
  • Warranty wording is as of Oct 18, 2026 and will change.

FAQ

Why is my automatic cat feeder not dispensing food?

The common causes named in PETKIT's own troubleshooting sheet are wet or oversized food, a blocked chute or food outlet, a dirty anti-clog sensor at the outlet, low batteries, or a power cut with no batteries installed. Start by holding the manual feed button: if food comes out, the problem is the schedule or connection, not the mechanism.

Manual feeding works but scheduled meals do not. What should I check?

PETKIT's troubleshooting sheet says to check whether the feeder was offline or powered off at the time of the failed meal. If the network was fine, contact PETKIT support with the date and time of the missed meal, the failure record in the app, and the device serial number (SN).

Will a PETKIT feeder still dispense food when the Wi-Fi is down?

PETKIT's troubleshooting sheet says yes, it keeps dispensing on the schedule you set. The Fresh Element Solo manual adds that meals during that time may show as unknown in the app, only up to 10 records sync once it reconnects, and you cannot change the schedule while it is offline.

What is the maximum kibble size for PETKIT feeders?

The YumShare Solo and YumShare Dual-hopper 2 manuals recommend dry kibble no larger than 12 mm (0.47 in) and freeze-dried pieces no larger than 9 mm (0.35 in). The Fresh Element Solo Amazon listing gives the same 12 mm limit for dry food. Pieces above the limit are a common reason food will not come out.

When should I contact PETKIT support instead of cleaning again?

PETKIT's sheet says to open the lid, press manual feed, and watch the impeller. If it does not turn, or turns abnormally, email support@petkit.com with a short video of the fault and the device SN.
