Cat Water Fountain Not Pumping Water? 9 Checks Before You Buy a New Pump
Cat fountain not pumping or only trickling? Check smart-mode pauses, low water, sensor mode, power, airlocks, a clogged impeller, and the filter, in order.
Editorial buying guide · Updated · ByPet Product Compass Editorial ·Editorial policy ·Methodology

The short answer
When a cat water fountain stops pumping, the pump has usually not died. Work through these checks in order:
- Is it just pausing? Smart or intermittent modes stop the flow on purpose.
- Is the water level high enough? Many fountains stop the pump when water runs low.
- Is it on battery in sensor-only mode? Some cordless fountains only flow when a pet walks up.
- Is power reaching the base? Check the cable, the adapter, and the indicator light.
- Is the pump seated and the outlet pipe attached?
- Is there air trapped in the pump?
- Is hair or residue jamming the impeller or foam pre-filter?
- Did you just change the filter without resetting?
- Is mineral buildup stiffening the impeller?
Only when all nine come up clean is a replacement pump worth buying. For PETKIT wireless-pump fountains, that part is the PETKIT replacement wireless pump (ASIN B0B2DM5Q7N).
This guide is based on manufacturer listings, a PETKIT manual, and a PETKIT distributor’s cleaning guide. We have not tested these fountains hands-on. Your model’s own manual wins wherever it disagrees with the general steps here.
If you are still choosing a fountain rather than fixing one, start with how to choose a cat water fountain.
1. Check whether the fountain is in smart or intermittent mode
This is the most common false alarm. Many fountains have a mode that runs the pump in cycles to save power and filter life.
The PETKIT EverSweet 3 Pro manual describes smart mode (green light) as intermittent flow, with a default of water flowing for 3 minutes and stopping for 3 minutes. You can change the timing in the PETKIT app. Normal mode (blue light on that model) runs continuously. The EverSweet Solo 2 manual, as republished on Manuals+, also describes smart mode as intermittent pumping with a default interval of 3 minutes.
What to do: Watch the fountain for at least one full cycle (about 6 minutes on the default setting), or switch to normal mode. If water starts flowing again on its own, nothing is broken.
2. Refill to the MAX line and look for a low-water standby light
Many fountains stop the pump when the water runs low so the pump does not run dry.
- The PETKIT Solo SE listing says the pump automatically stops when the fountain is short of water, and the indicator turns to a flashing blue light when it is out of water.
- The EverSweet 3 Pro manual says a flashing blue light indicates water shortage and the device stays in standby until it is refilled.
The water can look fine from above and still sit below the sensor’s threshold, especially after cleaning, or if the tank was not seated fully on the base.
What to do: Refill to the MAX line, but not above it. Make sure the tank sits flat on the base, then give the fountain a minute to resume.
3. On a cordless fountain, check for sensor-only mode
Battery fountains often limit what they do when unplugged. The Gardner Pet cordless fountain listing says it runs only in sensor mode on battery: water flows when a pet comes close, and continuous flow needs the cable plugged in. A fountain that sits still until the cat walks up is working as designed.
What to do: Wave a hand near the sensor, check the battery charge, or plug it in and switch to continuous mode to confirm the pump runs.
4. Confirm power reaches the base
Many plug-in fountains run from USB and do not include a wall adapter. The Gardner Pet Vortex listing says no wall adapter is included. The PETKIT Solo 2 listing says the USB power adapter is not included and asks for a 5V 1A adapter. The EverSweet 3 Pro manual lists a rated voltage of 5V.
- Try a different wall adapter that matches the manual’s rating, and plug it straight into a wall outlet rather than a hub or a weak USB port.
- Check the cable for kinks, chew marks, or a loose connector at the base.
- On the EverSweet 3 Pro, alternating blue and green flashing indicates a power failure, per the manual. The manual’s fix is to reconnect the USB cable to restart, or contact customer service.
If you just moved the fountain, check the new spot
A fountain that worked yesterday and stopped after a move is often telling you about the new corner, not about a dead pump. Work through the move before you order parts:
- The cable no longer reaches. A USB fountain unplugged so you could shift it, or plugged into a switched strip, looks exactly like a failed pump. Put it back on the old outlet, or run the cable along the wall to a live one. If the cable cannot do that, the new spot needs a battery model, not a longer cord across the floor.
- It is now on battery. Unplugging a cordless fountain to move it changes the flow mode. The Gardner Pet Cordless listing limits cordless use to sensor mode, so the pump sits still until a pet walks up. PETKIT says the EVERSWEET MAX pumps about 25 seconds per hour on battery. Plug it back in if you want to see continuous flow.
- The base is tilted. A rug edge or a mat bunched under one side keeps a wireless-pump tank off its contacts. Flatten the mat, set the fountain on a level floor, and reseat the pump (next section) before you assume the pump failed.
- The food bowl came with it. Kibble falls into a tray that sits against the bowl and clogs the inlet. Separate them by a few feet, then clean the pump.
The room rules for food, litter, the cord, a splash mat, and cleaning access are in where to put a cat water fountain. Fix the spot first so the same stoppage does not come back next week.
5. Reseat the pump and the outlet pipe
PETKIT Australia, an official PETKIT distributor, lists several causes of weak or no flow that come down to assembly:
- the pump not sitting flat in its designated groove
- a loose outlet pipe between the pump and the water outlet
- an impeller put back incorrectly after cleaning
Wireless-pump designs such as the EverSweet Solo 2 and Solo SE get their power through the base rather than a cable in the water, so a pump that sits slightly off its spot may not run at all.
What to do: Unplug, lift the pump out, set it back squarely in its groove, press the outlet pipe on firmly at both ends, and reassemble the tank before plugging back in.
6. Clear trapped air
Air caught in the pump chamber can stop it from moving water even when the tank is full. This often happens right after a refill or a deep clean.
PETKIT Australia’s fix is to turn the fountain off, make sure the pump is fully submerged, and restart it. A third-party PETKIT repair write-up from Pet Infrastructure suggests a similar step for EverSweet Max and 3 Pro owners: hold the reassembled pump underwater and shake it gently until bubbles stop coming out of the nozzle.
7. Clean the impeller, pump chamber, and foam pre-filter
This is the fix PETKIT itself points to. The Solo 2 listing says a thorough pump cleaning can help when water flow is weak or stops, or when the pump gets noisy. The replacement pump listing recommends taking the pump apart and cleaning it at least once every two weeks.
The cleaning order in PETKIT Australia’s guide, condensed:
- Unplug and empty the fountain.
- Remove the pump and take off the foam pre-filter.
- Open the pump cover and lift out the impeller.
- Brush hair and residue out of the impeller and its chamber with a small brush.
- Rinse, put the impeller back the right way, and reassemble.
- Do not immerse the electrical base, and do not force small parts.
The foam pre-filter sits at the pump inlet on wireless-pump models, according to the Solo SE listing. A clogged foam pad can starve the pump of water. If the foam is matted or falling apart, replace it. The PETKIT foam filter 15-pack (ASIN B0B24ZXBG7, in the product cards below) is listed for wireless-pump models such as EverSweet Max, 3 Pro, Solo 2, and Solo SE, with changes about every 1–2 months. It is a separate part from the Filter Unit 3.0 cartridge.
8. Reset after a filter change
If the fountain stopped right after you put in a new filter, check the reset step first. PETKIT Canada says to reset the fountain after replacing the filter, otherwise the filter light will not go off. The EverSweet 3 Pro manual says to complete the reset in the app. Some third-party repair guides go further and report that skipping the reset can stop the pump entirely. We have not confirmed that on every model, but the reset costs nothing to try.
Also check that the new cartridge is seated in the orientation your manual shows. Soak timing, reset steps, and the Filter Unit 3.0 schedule are covered in how often to change a PETKIT fountain filter.
9. Remove mineral buildup
In hard-water areas, scale can build up on the impeller and in its well, making the rotor stiff or stopping it. The Pet Infrastructure write-up suggests soaking the impeller and pump body in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water for about 30 minutes, scrubbing the impeller well with a cotton swab, then rinsing thoroughly with clean water. This is third-party advice, not PETKIT’s official instruction. Check your manual’s cleaning guidance first, and never soak the powered base.
When to replace the pump
After all nine checks, replacing the pump makes sense when:
- the impeller does not spin freely after cleaning and descaling
- the pump stays silent on a full tank, in normal mode, on a known-good 5V adapter
- the pump starts and stops repeatedly with no mode or water-level reason
PETKIT Australia notes that pump life varies with use and maintenance and that the pump should be replaced when necessary. Warranty lengths and pump-cleaning intervals by maker are in how long cat water fountain pumps last.
PETKIT replacement wireless pump (B0B2DM5Q7N)
- Listed compatibility: EverSweet Max, EverSweet 3 Pro, EverSweet Solo 2, EverSweet Solo SE. The Solo 2 and Solo SE listings both name B0B2DM5Q7N as their replacement pump.
- Not compatible: the listing says it is not suitable for the EverSweet 3.
- Seller: PETKIT-US, shipped from Amazon.
- Feedback: Amazon’s review summary described durability feedback as mixed.
If you are unsure which pump your fountain uses, the listing itself asks buyers to contact PETKIT first. For non-PETKIT fountains, buy the replacement pump the fountain’s maker specifies. Generic pumps rarely match the housing, the magnetic coupling, or the outlet size.
Is the fountain loud as well as slow?
Noise and weak flow often share a cause. PETKIT Australia lists low water, a pump touching the tank wall, hair in the impeller chamber, trapped air, and a loose outlet pipe as common reasons a pump gets louder. Fix the flow problem with the checks above and the noise usually changes with it.
When water is still moving and the sound is the problem, use why is my cat water fountain making noise. This page stays on the case where flow has stopped or slowed to a trickle.
Prevent it from happening again
- Rinse the pump and foam each time you refill, and do a full pump clean on the schedule your manual gives. The replacement pump listing suggests at least every two weeks. Our step-by-step fountain cleaning guide covers the full take-apart order for EverSweet and Gardner Pet models.
- Keep the tank between the MIN and MAX lines.
- Replace filters on the manufacturer’s schedule and reset afterwards.
- Keep the fountain away from the food bowl so kibble does not end up in the pump. Raised or tilted bowls set a short distance away can help. See how to choose raised cat bowls and where to put a cat water fountain for the gap from the bowl, the litter box, and the cord.
- Keep a bowl of fresh water out while the fountain is out of action. If the pump keeps failing and you are asking whether to keep the machine, a washed bowl is a complete setup. Our cat water fountain vs bowl comparison lines up cleaning, noise, and plug-in versus cordless power before you replace the whole fountain.
What this guide does not claim
- We have not tested any of these fountains or pumps, measured flow, or checked pump lifespan.
- Indicator colors and reset gestures differ between models and revisions. The EverSweet 3 Pro and Solo SE details above come from those products’ own documentation and may not match yours.
- Vinegar descaling and the underwater shake come from a third-party repair guide, not PETKIT.

FAQ
Why does my cat fountain stop and start on its own?
Many fountains have an intermittent mode. The PETKIT EverSweet 3 Pro manual describes smart mode as water flowing for 3 minutes and stopping for 3 minutes by default, adjustable in the app. Switch to normal (continuous) mode or watch for a full cycle before assuming the pump has failed.
Why is my cat water fountain not pumping even though it is full?
The most common causes named in PETKIT documentation and distributor guides are a pump that is not seated in its groove, hair or residue around the impeller, a clogged foam pre-filter, trapped air in the pump, or a loose outlet pipe. Unplug, clean, reseat, and refill before buying parts.
What does a flashing blue light mean on a PETKIT fountain?
On the EverSweet 3 Pro, the manual says a flashing blue light indicates water shortage and the device is in standby until refilled, while alternating blue and green flashing indicates a power failure. On the Solo SE, the listing says the light flashes blue when the fountain is out of water. Check your own model's manual, because indicator meanings vary.
Which PETKIT fountains use the replacement wireless pump B0B2DM5Q7N?
The Amazon listing names EverSweet Max, EverSweet 3 Pro, EverSweet Solo 2, and EverSweet Solo SE, and states it is not suitable for the EverSweet 3. Confirm your exact model before ordering.
Do I have to reset the fountain after changing the filter?
PETKIT Canada says to reset the fountain after replacing the filter, otherwise the filter light will not go off. The EverSweet 3 Pro manual says to complete the reset in the app. If the pump stopped right after a filter change, do the reset before anything else.
