Why is my cat water fountain making noise?

Why is my cat water fountain making noise? On the PETKIT EverSweet models and the Gardner Pet fountains covered here, the sound usually comes from low water, a dirty impeller, a pump or filter that is not seated, or air in the pump. Refill to the marked line, set the pump flat in its groove, and clean the impeller before you buy a new pump.

A gurgle or a fountain that is suddenly so loud often means the water is low or the pump just took in air. A buzz or grind that got worse over days usually means hair or residue around the impeller. A click while water is moving can be filter carbon inside the pump. A rattle can mean the pump is touching the tank wall instead of sitting in its groove.

This page is based on public sources: PETKIT EverSweet manuals, PETKIT Australia’s pump guide, and a Gardner Pet instruction manual. We did not measure these pumps.

Match the sound to the maker’s fix

Use the row that matches what you hear, then the section under it. The sources are the manuals named in those sections.

A cat water fountain so loud all of a sudden is usually the first row. The two click rows are split because they are not the same repair.

Refill before you take the pump apart

PETKIT Australia says a pump can get louder when there is not enough water around it. Refill, and do not go past the maximum line. Some PETKIT fountains then stop the pump, so a loud stretch followed by silence can be that cutoff.

The EVERSWEET MAX manual says to fill to the MAX line. The EverSweet 3 Pro manual (model P4108) says a flashing blue light means water shortage and the fountain stays in standby until you refill. It also says to keep the unit on a level surface. A mat bunched under one side can leave the pump high on one edge even when the tank looks full from above.

The Gardner Pet 8L instruction manual says that if the fountain is noisy, keep the water above the minimum line, then clean the pump and impeller if the sound remains. That booklet is for the 8L dog fountain, not the 3.8 L cordless model. The water-line check is still the first step that manual prints.

Wait a minute after you refill. If the gurgle stops, leave the pump alone.

Clean the impeller when the hum will not quit

A cat water fountain making a weird noise that was quiet last month is often hair on the impeller.

PETKIT Australia says to open the pump cover and clear hair or residue in the impeller chamber. The EverSweet 3 manual says to clean that silent pump every week so dirt does not clog the water path. The Gardner Pet 8L manual pairs its water-line check with cleaning the pump and impeller.

On PETKIT wireless-pump fountains, a foam pad sits at the pump inlet. A matted pad makes the pump work harder. Rinse it. If it is falling apart, replace the foam, not the round Filter Unit 3.0 cartridge. The title of the foam pack listing for ASIN B0B24ZXBG7 names EVERSWEET MAX, EVERSWEET 3 Pro, Solo 2, and Solo SE.

Unplug first. Do not soak the powered base. The EVERSWEET MAX manual says not to rinse or soak the wireless base or the control module. The take-apart order is in how to clean a cat water fountain. Put the impeller back the way it came out. PETKIT Australia lists an impeller installed the wrong way among the reasons flow stays weak after a clean, and that pump will not run quietly either.

A click after a filter change

The EverSweet 3 manual (model P4102) describes two clicks.

A click while the pump is circulating can be coconut-shell carbon from the filter. The manual says a little black powder can float out because the filter uses that carbon, and that the pump can draw it in. The printed fix is to check and clean the pump. Use this when the sound started right after a new cartridge.

A separate line describes a click when the device checks battery voltage. That one is the physical switch, and the manual treats it as normal. If water is flowing and you hear a single click only at those checks, cleaning the impeller will not change it.

The same manual’s install steps say to soak the filter twice for about five minutes each, rinse lightly, and press it into the tray’s center hole until it is tight. Then align the pump with the fixed groove, and line the tray outlet up with the pump outlet. If water moves in the tank but little reaches the spout, realign the pump with the outlet and reseat the tray after a filter change or a tray clean. A low level, or a blocked filter, pipe, or pump, are the other causes it lists for a stream that has shrunk.

The listing title for Filter Unit 3.0 (ASIN B0BVQPJRLH) names EverSweet 2S, 3, 3 Pro, Solo, Solo 2, and Solo SE. Soak time, the mode-based interval, and the reset are in how often to change a PETKIT fountain filter. Reset the light. Clean the pump for a new click or hum.

P4102 uses a different pump from the wireless replacement sold for MAX, 3 Pro, Solo 2, and Solo SE. The shared pattern is the useful part: filter pressed in, pump in the groove, outlet lined up. Use your own booklet when the button or the light color differs.

Seat the pump flat, then clear the air

PETKIT Australia includes a pump that is not sitting flat in its groove. A pump that touches the tank wall can add vibration. The EVERSWEET MAX manual says to set the pump in the groove, then push the outlet pipe on until it is installed to the end. The EverSweet 3 manual says to align the pump with the fixed groove and the tray outlet with the pump port.

Those PETKIT steps use a groove. They do not describe suction cups, and the Gardner Pet 8L noisy-fountain lines do not either. If the booklet in your box shows suction cups, press the pump down until the cups hold. Do not add cups to a wireless PETKIT pump that belongs in a groove.

Why are there bubbles in my cat water fountain right after a refill or a clean? PETKIT Australia calls that trapped air. Turn the fountain off, make sure the pump is fully submerged, and restart it. Bubbles that fade after the restart are the air leaving. Bubbles that return as soon as the level drops are the low-water row, so refill before you open the pump again.

The same PETKIT Australia guide says an outlet pipe that is loose at the pump or at the spout can weaken the flow. Push it on at both ends. A half-seated pipe can hiss or gurgle even when the impeller is clean.

Gardner Pet: sensor mode versus a noisy pump

The Gardner Pet cordless listing (ASIN B0H392WP8Z), checked Oct 26, 2026, says the plugged-in fountain has sensor mode and continuous flow, and that cordless use is sensor mode only. A unit that sits quiet, then runs when a pet comes close, and then goes quiet again, is following that listing. That start-and-stop can sound like a weird noise if you expected a constant stream. Plug it in and switch to continuous flow if you want to hear whether the pump itself is rough.

The listing does not print a noise troubleshooting table. For a Gardner Pet fountain that is loud the whole time it runs, the brand’s 8L manual is the published pair of checks: water above the minimum line, then a clean pump and impeller. The 3.8 L cordless and the 1-gallon Vortex are different models. The Vortex is not sold through this site right now. Do not order the 8L pump and expect it to fit the cordless housing.

A designed pause is not a rattle

Some of these fountains are supposed to go quiet for minutes at a time.

The EverSweet 3 Pro manual describes smart mode as interrupted flow, defaulting to 3 minutes on and 3 minutes off, adjustable in the app. Normal mode on that model is continuous. The EVERSWEET MAX manual says that on battery the pump runs 25 seconds per hour by default, and that mode switching waits until it is plugged in. A short run once an hour on battery is that schedule.

If the pump stays silent and no water moves in continuous mode, on a full tank, with the pump reseated, use cat water fountain not pumping water. That guide is for no flow. This one is for a fountain that still runs and sounds wrong.

Replace the pump only after the cheap checks

A new pump is the last step. PETKIT Australia and the EVERSWEET MAX manual both say pump life varies with use and maintenance, and that you replace the pump when it is necessary.

The listing for the PETKIT replacement wireless pump (ASIN B0B2DM5Q7N) names EVERSWEET MAX, EVERSWEET 3 Pro, Solo 2, and Solo SE, says it is not suitable for the EVERSWEET 3, and says to contact PETKIT if you are unsure. It also says to take the pump apart and clean it at least every two weeks so flow stays smooth. Order it if the impeller still will not spin freely, or if a full tank in continuous mode is still loud after the table above.

A second fountain does not remove hair from the impeller you already have.

If the noise is why you are shopping

A fountain that stays loud after a refill, a flat pump, a tight outlet pipe, and a clean impeller is a fair reason to look at a different format. How to choose a cat water fountain covers cordless versus plug-in, trays, and the cleaning you will actually do. Seller quiet claims stay seller claims.

If you will not open a pump, a washed bowl has no motor to rattle. If you will keep the machine, why is my cat water fountain making noise almost always comes back to the line, the groove, the impeller, the filter seat, or air in the pump, in that order.

FAQ

Why is my cat water fountain so loud all of a sudden?

A sudden gurgle or a louder hum usually means the water has dropped or air entered the pump after a refill. PETKIT Australia says to refill without going over the maximum line, and to turn the fountain off, submerge the pump, and restart if air is trapped. A hum that grew over days is more often hair or residue on the impeller.

Why is my cat water fountain making a weird clicking noise?

The EverSweet 3 manual describes two different clicks. A click while the pump is circulating water can be coconut-shell carbon from the filter inside the pump, and the manual says to check and clean the pump. A click when the unit checks battery voltage is described as the physical switch, and the manual treats that sound as normal.

Why are there bubbles in my cat water fountain?

Bubbles or a gurgle right after a refill or a clean often mean air is still in the pump. PETKIT Australia's fix is to turn the fountain off, make sure the pump is fully submerged, and restart it. Keep the water at the marked line so the intake is not pulling air.

When should I replace a noisy cat fountain pump?

Replace it after a refill, a flat reseat, a fully attached outlet pipe, and a clean impeller still leave the noise on a full tank. The PETKIT wireless replacement pump listing names EVERSWEET MAX, EVERSWEET 3 Pro, Solo 2, and Solo SE, and says it is not suitable for the EVERSWEET 3. Confirm the model on the listing before you order.
